CANDIDATE ANNOUNCEMENT - SHERIFF'S RACE

MIKE HURT

I would like to take this opportunity to give you my background and ask for your support as the next Gibson County Sheriff.

Gibson County is where I call home as I am a lifelong resident. I graduated from Princeton Community High School in 1987. I joined the United States Army where I was a paratrooper stationed out of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina for three years. I joined the Army Reserves and was stationed in Evansville, IN. I got activated to deploy to Operation Desert Shield/Storm, serving time in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq. I met my wife, Charlotte Hurt, during the war and we now have three daughters and two grandchildren and another grandchild on the way. I started work at the Gibson County Sheriff's Office in March of 1993 as a reserve deputy and was hired as a corrections officer in October 1993. I was elected to the Princeton City Council in 1996 and served a four year term. I also served on the Board of Public Works during that time period. The Princeton Police Department hired me in 1996 as a patrolman, that same year I graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. I was promoted to road patrol Sergeant in 2000 and assigned to Investigations in 2004 as a Detective Sergeant. My duties have been all major crimes which include murder, armed robbery, and all sex crimes. Our investigations of sex crimes have involved coordination with the FBI along with assisting in other agencies cases. I have an outstanding working relationship with Division of Family and Children. This is vital when you have a child in need of services. When the process moves swiftly it is beneficial to all involved. My relationship with the Prosecutors office and the court system are phenomenal. I have also been in charge of the drug investigations, working closely with the Drug Enforcement Administration, whether that be utilizing confidential sources all the way to surveillance on high level drug trafficking. These efforts have brought several drug “sweeps” incarcerating those who bring and manufacture illegal substances into our neighborhoods. Through these efforts we have been able to take Gibson County from a top five county in methamphetamine production down to one of the lowest counties in this category. I also have worked closely with the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, by taking guns out of violent criminal hands. I am a certified Voice Stress Analyzer (Lie Detector). Currently I am the Assistant Chief of Police at the Princeton Police Department. I have held this position since January, 2016. I have handled personnel matters and am in charge of all investigations. I am active in bike patrol. It’s time to elect someone who has been in the trenches, and knows how to handle situations that can be tough and stressful. Thank you for your consideration and vote on May 8th, 2018.

CANDIDATE ANNOUNCEMENT - SHERIFF'S RACE

Detective Sergeant Bruce Vanoven of the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination for sheriff in the 2018 election year.

Bruce Vanoven grew up in Princeton and graduated from the Princeton Community High School in 1992. After graduating from high school he furthered his studies at Oakland City University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies. While attending college he married Princeton resident Patty (Cotner) Vanoven together they have one son, Micah who is currently a senior at Princeton Community High School. Bruce regularly attends the First General Baptist Church of Princeton, Indiana.

Bruce served for five years on the board of directors of Uncharted International, a non-profit ministry who’s primary focus is “to advance the gospel in unreached/ unengaged people groups, as well as, help people go farther in their faith.” Through his involvement with Uncharted Bruce has traveled to Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) nine times on short term mission trips. During these trips to Myanmar Bruce served the people in various ways through work projects, gospel presentations, and through serving as a trip leader on multiple teams.

Bruce’s relationship with the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office began in January of 2001 when the opportunity presented itself Bruce joined the sheriff’s office as a reserve deputy. Upon becoming a Reserve he served proudly in that capacity until he was hired as a full time Deputy in July of that same year.

Since joining the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office he has been crucial in the involvement of several high profile cases that have affected the citizens of Gibson County. Most notably on July 17, 2006 Vanoven located the victims of a triple homicide that occurred in Pike County. Bruce’s lifesaving actions that night saved the life one of the four victims, and led to the conviction of Nicholas Harbison for murder, a conviction that lead to a sentence of three life sentences plus an additional fifty years. Bruce has received much attention and has received several awards for his heroic and courageous actions, but the one he is most proud of is being selected as only the second deputy in the Sheriff’s Office 200 year history who was awarded a Merit Award for going above and beyond the call of duty as a Deputy Sheriff in his involvement with the Pike County triple homicide case.

Over the years Bruce has devoted himself to training other officers at the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office. He was certified as an Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Instructor in 2007. Since then he has received additional specialized certifications in Close Quarter Combat and Ground Fighting. He also serves as a rotating instructor at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield, Indiana where he instructs Emergency Vehicle Operations. Bruce values training and since 2011 he has served as the primary instructor for the department’s Reserve and Special Deputy program.

In addition to his courageous acts and his love for training Bruce has had the opportunity to volunteer at the Indiana Sheriff’s Association’s Youth Leadership camp each summer since 2011. This camp is held annually in Brown County and is for eighth graders who want to develop their leadership abilities and are transitioning into high school. Through the years Bruce and other deputies from around the state have had the opportunity to make a lasting and lifelong impact in the lives of several students from Gibson County.
